This spicy pepper burger brings the heat with a triple threat of jalapeno, habanero, and ghost peppers – perfect for anyone who likes their burgers with a serious kick.

A spicy burger topped with a jalapeno popper.

If there’s one thing that consistently catches my eye, it’s a spicy burger. Anytime I see one at a restaurant, I know I have to give it a try. So I wanted to make a homemade burger for all my fellow heat seekers out there, cause sometimes a regular homemade cheeseburger just doesn’t cut it.

When we first made this recipe, we dubbed it the “firecracker burger” and we’ve been making it around the 4th of July ever since because it never disappoints. Between the spicy pepper jack cheese, crispy fried jalapenos, and thick ghost pepper hot sauce, it hits all the marks: spicy, juicy, and totally addicting with a little bit of fire in every bite.

What This Recipe Entails

This recipe is quick and straightforward – just prep your toppings and grill up some burger patties. And if you’re up for it, we like to top it off with a bacon stuffed jalapeno popper for a fun garnish and a little extra heat.

  • Prep Time: 25 minutes
  • Cook Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • English muffin – We love using lightly toasted english muffins for the small bread-to-burger ratio. That way there’s less to cool you down!
  • Burger patties – If you want to make your own patties from scratch, check out our classic burger patties recipe. We like to add some red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper to add spiciness to the burger patty itself.
  • Pepper jack cheese – We like habanero jack as it provides a great flavor along with the fiery punch we crave. And if you’re feeling extra bold, try ghost pepper jack!
  • Hot sauce – Choose your favorite hot sauce for this one, but we recommend something on the thicker side for two reasons: 1. It’s much easier to add a bunch of hot sauce without it running off, and 2. It makes sure the burger and bun don’t get soggy. If you don’t have a go-to sauce, check out Yellowbird’s ghost pepper hot sauce
  • Jalapeno bottle caps – In case you aren’t familiar with bottle caps, they’re jalapeno wheels which are floured and fried for a crunchy, spicy topping (or snack!). And don’t worry, we go into how to make them later in this post. You can also sub in raw jalapeno slices if you prefer, but keep those seeds in for maximum heat.
  • Jalapeno Popper (optional garnish) – Not required, but come on, it’s awesome. Skewer on a jalapeno popper for a fun and fiery garnish. Trust me on this one, you and any lucky guests are gonna love it.

How To Make A Spicy Triple Pepper Burger

Burgers are so easy to make, and this one is no exception. It’s just about prepping each part of the recipe, and then putting it all together.

  1. Make the jalapeno poppers (optional step) – If you want a jalapeno popper garnish, we recommend doing that first. Either follow our jalapeno popper recipe, or make some store-bought ones.
  2. Prep the burger patties – Follow our classic burger recipe, make your own, or use your favorite store-bought option. If you’re making ours or your own, add in a dash of cayenne or crushed red pepper flakes for some added heat.
  3. Make the bottle caps – Slice jalapenos into rounds. Coat in egg, dredge in flour, and pan fry until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  4. Grill the burgers – Cook the patties to your desired doneness. Add cheese 2 to 3 minutes before they’re done to melt it fully.
  5. Toast the english muffin – While the burger patties are cooking, lightly toast the english muffins. We like to throw them on the top rack of the grill since it’s easy and quick.
  6. Assemble – Place the cheesy patty on the muffin bottom, top with jalapeno bottle caps and a healthy drizzle of ghost pepper hot sauce. Add the top bun and skewer the jalapeno popper right through the center.

Expert Tips

  • Choose your cheese wisely While regular pepper jack is acceptable, it’s entry level. Habanero jack is a good middle ground. But ghost pepper jack? That’s for experts only.
  • Slicing the cheese – If you can’t find pre-sliced spicy cheese, use a fresh block. Simply cut the block in half, turn it on its side, and make some slices yourself. Don’t worry about them being perfect, they’ll likely be thicker than pre-sliced cheese but are we really gonna complain about extra cheese or spice? I think not.
  • Hot sauce – A thicker hot sauce works better for this burger. It stays on well and thinner sauces risk making the english muffin soggy.
  • Save some time – If you want to make these burgers for some friends and family you probably don’t want to be making everything while they’re visiting. Make the jalapeno bottle caps and the jalapeno poppers (because you can’t skip the garnish for the guests!) ahead of time and reheat quickly in the oven at 350, the microwave, or even on the grill if you have a basket.
  • Control the spice level – You can scale the heat by adjusting your ingredients. Want less fire? Go with regular pepper jack and fewer jalapeños. Want more? Double up the bottle caps and hit it with that extra sauce.
  • Making extra bottle caps – We hate food waste. So I always feel bad not using the full egg when battering and frying things like bottle caps. To help use the rest or at least most of the egg, I tend to make a couple jalapenos worth of bottle caps. Having extra fried jalapeno wheels around make for a great snack or additions to sandwiches, pizzas, and salads.

This burger is a lot of work, but it really does feel like something I could only get at a specialty burger joint.
